Federal safety investigators are reporting that on certain
trucks built with a TRW global adjustable upper steering
column, two upper tilt plate bolts may loosen over time and
fall out. They hold the upper column assembly in place. When
parts fall off your steering system, things aren’t
going to get better. Turns out that the steering column pivot
may fracture if the bolts are missing when an excessive force
is applied to the steering wheel.
The steering can respond different than expected and the
driver can loose control.
The affected vehicles were manufactured between February
2006 and June 2007 and Freightliner estimates that about
40% of the trucks have the problem. The “missing and
loose bolts” steering problem was discovered in mid
May and federal safety officials notified in July 2007.
