Chrysler Recalls Sebring for
Fire Danger
Do
you own one of these potential lemon Chrysler Sebring vehicles?
- 2007 Chrysler Sebring
- 2008 Chrysler Sebring
Turns out that the engine’s coolant can be “drawn” into
the left radiator cooling fan’s motor connector and that
can cause a short circuit and result in an engine compartment
fire. Instead of keeping the engine cool, it can erupt into
flames? Chrysler admits to knowing about at least 17 engine
fires that can be blamed on the defective design.

The problem came to light when a Sebring rental car in Florida
caught fire, causing engineers to look over 20 other rental
cars sitting in Florida, finding 4 others with fluid in the
connector, apparently ripe for a fire. The radiator overflow
spout on the recovery bottle apparently can contact the left
radiator cooling fan’s ground terminal and that can allow
the coolant to enter the electrical connector through “wicking.” The
process is similar to how water in a glass can “crawl” up
a piece of cloth that is draped over the edge of the glass
over time.

The 2.4 Liter equipped Sebrings are the problem cars and the
recall includes the Dodge Avenger models in the same time frame
because they were all built at the same time. The bad vehicles
were built between March 9, 2006 and July 27, 2007 but no one
knows how many of the vehicles have the problem.
