Federal safety investigators announced that Honda is recalling
34,300 Fit subcompacts from the 2007 and 2008 model years
because of a bad wiring harness connected to the passenger
side airbag sensor. Salt from melting snow can penetrate
and leak into the wire harness, federal officials said,
and that can lead to broken wiring.

But, in keeping with the NHTSA decision not to let all
vehicle owners know about safety defects in their car (you
can thank conservative politicians who hamstrung the safety
agency’s authority for that), only owners who live
in “cold weather” states are being notified
of the safety defect: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey,
New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia,
West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Of course, if you happen to move into one of those states
with your Honda Fit, the defect could cause you a fit!
