Toyota has announced it is recalling 75,000 hybrid 2004
Prius and 2005 Prius models because a computer software problem
that could cause the car’s warning lights to come on,
the gasoline engine to shut down, and the electric motor
to operate at diminished power. You’ll have enough
power to get off the road, but the engine won’t run.
Calling it a “Voluntary Special Service Campaign” (that’s
what Toyota calls it) might be a little misleading, however,
since it does not really sound as serious as the problem
might be if it happens to you. One day after announcing the
US recall of 75,000 Prius vehicles, Toyota made it a world
wide recall and increased the number of 160,000 of the vehicles
being recalled for the software glitch.
If problem happens to you, your vehicle will enter what
is euphemistically called a "fail safe" mode. This
allows only a very limited operation of the vehicle by using
the electric motor. Under this condition, the gasoline engine
will shut down, according to Toyota spokeswoman Allison Takahashi.
The electrically powered brake and steering system will
continue to function normally, and the electric motor will
provide enough power to pull the vehicle off the road, hopefully
away from traffic, Takahashi says. Once the vehicle is stopped,
you “may” be able to restart the gasoline engine.

This appears to be the first recall of hybrid vehicles for
an engine related problem and is expected to impact 75,000
Prius motor vehicles. Normally Toyota quality and engineering
is quite high but a computer programming error is blamed
for the “Engine Shuts Down” problem that is the
subject of this voluntary recall by Toyota.
