GM & Isuzu Recall 106,000 SUVs for Door Latch Danger

Nearly 106,000 GMC and Isuzu SUVs have been recalled to fix a rear door latch that may not close properly due to corrosion. Result? The two backseat doors can come open while the vehicle is being driven. Because GM builds the Isuzu Ascender too, a small number of the 2003 Isuzu Ascender SUVs are also involved.

Even though the recall was announced in October, before winter strikes, GM also said it will not start doing any of the recall repairs until January 2006. The three month delay leaves consumers wondering about vehicle safety until then...

In some cases, slush, water and salt has passed thru a seal at the bottom of the door and come in and reached the door’s latch mechanism. GM admitted that “over time” the leak can cause corrosion and make the door not latch correctly.

The call involves vehicles registered or sold in the Northeast and Midwest US, where corrosion can occur due to winter road salt. States involved include: Ohio, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Curiously, Kentucky was not included in the recall even though Kentucky winters can be a rough as Ohio at times, particular in the higher elevations.
