In August 2005 GM recalled vehicles located in 14 states:
Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. At first, the federal
government questioned the need to do the recall in six more
states, but GM balked. Now GM has agreed to expand the recall
to include GM trucks and SUV’s in Delaware, Iowa, Maryland,
Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Public reports indicate that customers who complained enough
about the problem might have been taken care of by a “secret” warranty
program that GM dealers were aware of back in 2003.
Road salt corrosion interferes with the ABS sensors and
can cause the system to activate at the wrong speeds, frightening
drivers and making stopping hazardous, unpredictable and
unsafe.
The Detroit News reported that Donald Nickerson, a fire
chief in Jackson, Maine. Nickerson said his wife recently
had a close call in their GMC Sierra 2500 pickup. Returning
home from a short errand, she couldn't get the truck to stop.
The brakes just "chattered," Nickerson said. She
let up on the pedal, and the brakes worked the second time. "I've
torn that truck all apart trying to figure out what's wrong," Nickerson
said. "You get ready to stop, and nothing happens. You
got a big truck, that's real scary. When I heard about the
recall, I said no wonder I've had all these problems."
