Corvettes Recalled for Roofs Flying Off

Take the Lemon TestDo you own a 2005 Corvette or a 2006 Corvette? Would you like a new one or your money back?

‘Vette owners are a loyal bunch, but GM is recalling more than 30,000 of them because a detachable roof design detaches when it isn’t supposed to. Reportedly, owners’ reports of the defect have been circulating for several months and GM has now admitted the problem is real.

The recall applies only to 2005 and 2006 vehicles with roofs that are designed to be detachable by releasing latches. The unintentional separation occurs when adhesive that holds the base of the roof to the car frame weakens and fails, the federal safety investigators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Indications of potential problem roofs include water leaks or a snapping noise when going over a bump, GM is reported to have said. GM admitted that it received nearly 400 reports of roof “partial separation” in addition to nearly two dozen of the roof flying off.

“It's a good thing that GM is doing this recall finally, because no roof is worse than a weak roof,'” said Joan Claybrook, president of the Washington-based consumer group Public Citizen. “The roof endangers other highway users as it flies off.”

The Corvette roof weighs less than 10 pounds and is made of plastic that is molded into a magnesium frame. Apparently it flies well when airborne, too, making it dangerous to other drivers on the highway, with no warning to other nearby cars. In a considerable understatement, a GM representative told the Detroit Free Press “You do not want to hit a 10-pound object at 70 miles per hour.”

If you’ve got a dangerous GM lemon, don’t go it alone!
