Word is that there are at least 512 vehicles waiting for
replacement internal door mechanisms to be manufactured and
the parts won’t be shipped until September 2006. Seems
that the original parts were made of plastic that weakens
over time and use and “flexes.” That can leave
the door intermittently unopenable from the inside until
they become permanently unopenable from the inside. The defect
can develop in as little as a few thousand miles or a few
months of use.
The 2006 Chevrolet SSR model isn’t involved in the
technical service bulletin (also called a “secret warranty” because
it isn’t publicized by GM). Chevrolet issued the repair
bulletin to its dealer on August 1, 2005. The 2006 SSR may
not have been included because GM either fixed the issue
or the problem had not yet been reported on the 2006 model
year line at the time the bulletin was published.
Reports of the defect are known to have begun registering
with the federal government’s safety recall department
last fall, but for Chevrolet to have issued a repair bulletin
on the problem in August, GM must have known of the issue
for some time prior to that.
Owners report being told “no problem found” and “could
not duplicate” on their first few repair attempts,
even though the Chevrolet dealers were sent the repair bulletin
almost a year ago. When the door part finally fails, owners
report being told that the parts to fix it aren’t even
made yet!
