Honda Recalls 81,000 Accords for Air Bag Defects

Take the Lemon TestAn air back seat positioning sensor, installed wrong, is the cause of 81,000 Honda Accord vehicles being recalled by Honda.

Do you own one of these potential lemon Honda Accord vehicles?

  • 2004 Honda Accord
  • 2005 Honda Accord

Honda is recalling over 81,000 of these vehicles because an airbag wiring harness was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location. As a result, it may malfunction. The sensor detects the driver seating position and adjusts airbag pressures.

Honda’s "official" investigation of the defect actually started July 2006 and was not concluded for nearly five months. On Christmas Day 2006, Honda finished its investigation and in January Honda admitted to federal safety investigators the defect could be real and could be dangerous.

Incorrect location of the sensor may cause wiring to break and the airbag system warning light to illuminate. It can also cause the airbag system to fully inflate with pressure regardless of the seating position.

That can cause injury for less than full size drivers in the event of a frontal crash, according to federal safety investigators.

This isn’t the first recall for the 04 and 05 Accord models.

The 2005 Honda Accord has had recalls before, including four recalls on lighting issues, one on loose wiring terminals, and two on the airbag system.

The 2004 Honda Accord also had a handful of recalls, including one in April 2004 that covered over 600,000 Honda vehicles and Acura vehicles with questionable transmission gear “tooth” issues that could result in failures that could cause an accident to occur. Although only a small percentage of the vehicle were suspected of actually having the defects, the vehicle models included:

  • 2002 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Honda Odyssey
  • 2004 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Honda Pilot
  • 2004 Honda Pilot
  • 2001 Acura MDX
  • 2002 Acura MDX
If you own a lemon Accord, or another lemon Honda, you may be entitled to your money back or a new vehicle.

If you’ve got a dangerous lemon, don’t go it alone!
