Turns out that on some trucks the retaining nut that holds
on the steering wheel just plain wasn’t installed.
The result? The steering wheel can literally just come right
off in your hands. The Mack recall number is SC0319.
These dangerous trucks were built between October 2 and
December 7, 2006. Strangely, Mack reported that one of the “built
wrong” trucks was actually discovered at the factory on
November 13 and a driver reported to Mack that a steering
wheel came off in his hands on December 7. Sounds
like a problem, right?
And what did Mack do? Mack didn’t bother to report
the defect to federal investigators until January 29, 2007.
Meanwhile, an unknown number of potentially deadly and dangerous
Mack trucks with the defect were driving around the country
without even knowing about the manufacturing defect. And
they call themselves “the greatest name in trucks” ?
Sounds just a little stupid to me...
