Ford Recalls 109,000 Police
Vehicles for Wheel Defects
Police
officers depend on the reliability of their car far more than
you or I do. Now comes a recall from Ford that says their Crown
Vic wheels may fall apart in a high speed chase. That’s
not good news for the thousands of police departments around
the country who depend on Ford wheels to keep them safe at
any speed.

Ford says the cracks can start small and take time to get
worse but vehicles often used in high speed severe conditions
can have a faster failure. Slow, fast, what difference does
it make? You don’t expect your wheels to come apart at
any speed and if you’re a police office chasing the bad
guy down the highway at over 120 + mph, you sure don’t
have time to worry or wonder if the wheels on your car are
safe.
The driver may notice slow or repeated air loss, a slight “nibble” in
steering, and the service department may find it hard to balance
the tire or wheel. If it’s just a tiny crack, the driver
may be able to still control the vehicle, but it can get much
worse with continued use and failure at high speed can result
in a high speed accident with fatal injuries.
Former police cars are often stripped of their police gear
and resold to private security firms or the public, so be careful.
Be safe and not sorry. Check every used Ford Crown Victoria
carefully before you buy it. And if you’re in a police
department that uses one of the affected models, have the wheels
checked regularly and carefully. Don’t let an accident
happen to you.
