Ford is recalling about 446,000 Ford Escape cross over vehicles
from the 2001 thru 2004 model years because the antilock brake
system’s wiring harness can smoke or melt or burn! And
you thought squeeling brakes were bad!
Turns out that some system seals are either missing or installed
wrong on the wiring harness. That can lead to corrosion when
road salt or water gets into the ABS module, an electrical
wiring connector, Ford admits. As a result, the ABS warning
light can come on and could lead to smoking or melting or burning
of the ABS system’s electrical connector.
Ford started investigating the problem in the summer of 2006
and federal safety investigators launched a detailed investigation
a few months later. Federal officials say nearly a hundred
of the Ford Escape vehicles have experienced a fire or the
melting or smoking symptoms, with the total pretty evenly split
between a fire or the melting-smoking.
Luckily the hybrid powertrain Escape is not on the recall
list.
