Mazda is recalling about 95,000 Mazda Tribute vehicles from
the 2001 thru 2004 model years because the antilock brake
system’s wiring harness can smoke or melt or burn!
And you thought squeeling brakes were bad!
Turns out that some system seals are either missing or installed
wrong on the wiring harness. That can lead to corrosion when
road salt or water gets into the ABS module, an electrical
wiring connector, Mazda admits. As a result, the ABS warning
light can come on and could lead to smoking or melting or
burning of the ABS system’s electrical connector.
Federal safety investigators launched a safety investigation
of the defect danger in November 2006. Federal officials
say several dozen of the Mazda Tribute vehicles have experienced
a fire or the melting or smoking symptoms.
The same switch is used in the Ford Escape (but not the
hybrid version) so Ford is also busy recalling nearly half
a million of those for the same reason.
