Federal safety investigators announced that DaimlerChrysler
has recalled 400,000 Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country
minivans for faulty air bag systems. The air bag sensors
may not deploy because of corrosion problems.
Turns out this another in a series of “climate” recalls
where the manufacturer only recalls that are owned in certain
states where the climate triggers the defective condition
to occur. This is a good example.
Brass bushings on the front air bag sensors can corrode
and crack on the front air bags, allowing water to enter
the sensor. When that happens, things go wrong and the sensor
may not work at all. That means the air bag may malfunction.
It may work. It may not.
Because wintertime road salt is a heavy contributor to the
corrosion risk, Chrysler is limiting the recall to just the
400,000 minivans that are owned in the “risk climate” where
road salt is used more heavily. That’s the northern
United States.
Of course, if you live in the southern US, Chrysler does
the recall, and you move to the northern US, you get the
corrosion — but not the recall repair. Result? Your
front air bag system may deteriorate and malfunction later
on. If you figure that out before your Chrysler minivan crashes,
then Chrysler says they’ll replace the air bag sensor
with a new one.
If you don’t find out in time, well, that tells you
something about how much Chrysler cares for safety. So, no
one should be surprised that although this is a recall, at
the same time Chrysler is saying that this is not really
a defect related to safety. Well, I guess that depends on
whose family is in the van.
Big government hacks who care more about big business and
its political contributions than public safety, those are
the ones responsible for allowing this “climate” recall
mess. Federal safety bureaucrats overruled department safety
investigators and “climate recalls” mushroomed
starting in 2006.
States covered by the recall: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont,
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana,
Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri,
Kentucky, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Nebraska, Kansas,
Alaska and the District of Columbia.
