Motor Vehicle & Dealer Secret
Warranties
Automotive manufacturers sometimes make mistakes in the
design or production of a new motor vehicle. This might be
a fluke on a small number of vehicles or it could be a design
defect applicable to the entire model line. Either way, it
can mean a “lemon” to you.
When dealers report too many mistakes on a vehicle, the
manufacturer often creates a secret warranty which tells
its dealers how to try to fix known defects. The manufacturer
usually tells their dealers to repair the problem at no cost
to you, even when the warranty has expired.
These free repairs are almost never publicized, so they
are often call “secret warranties”. We know how
to find out about them! If your vehicle has been plagued
with problems that the dealer just can’t seem to fix,

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has
a database of these secret warranties that have been issued
by vehicle manufacturers. You can look for secret warranties
(manufacturers sometimes call them “Technical Service
Bulletins”) on your vehicle by clicking
here.
Since consumers are not told about these secret warranties,
only the dealership and the manufacturer know about them.
If you have a problem with your vehicle, and you suspect
it is because of a design or production defect, complain
about it to the dealership.
If the dealership tries to charge you for repairs, ask them
if a secret warranty exists. If they say no, ask them to
call the manufacturer to get authorization to fix it for
free. If they tell you the manufacturer won’t cover
it, ask for the phone number so that you can call the manufacturer
yourself.
The squeaky wheel is the one that gets the grease, so the
moral of the story is simple: complain, complain, complain.
If you have a lemon car or a lemon truck or a lemon motorcycle,
